Ya, not only are we protected by the law, we are actually obliged to help if we are in such a situation. You cannot be found negligent by acting but you can be found negligent if you don't act.

I don't know what's more sad. The fact that people don't want to help for fear of being sued, or that somebody would sue anyone who was just trying to help in the first place.
