iPod issue

So I have an older 30gb ipod. I plugged it into the USB port and it played great last night. This morning when I got in the car, it played for about 3 seconds, then gave me an error message and I couldn't get the ipod to turn on. After about a minute it turned back on and played fine, but lost the position in the playlist. Is this normal? I tried turning the car off for about 5 minutes and back on, and the ipod picked up right where it left off.

Anyone have any ideas? A problem with the ipod maybe? I tried changing the source to FM tonight before I turned the car off, so we'll see in the morning what happens I guess.

It just wasn't showing connected. The iPod would be on and fine for a few seconds, then it would completely turn off and take a minute or so to come back on.

i always get that message, "unsupported device", when i use my ipod touch. It usually happens after 2 days of playing and i just replug and n use it again. I rather use the a regular usb flash drive. I never had any problems with it.

Sounds like you may have a bad connection between the device and the USB end of the cable. If the iPod USB cable or iPod connector is going bad, it could temporarily cause the very problem you just mentioned.

I'll check that out. Hopefully it's just the cable.

Ok, I am not getting an error message. Sorry for the confusion, I was really tired when I posted that.

What is happening is I left my ipod connected to the USB plug overnight. When I got in the car in the morning, the ipod was completely dead. No battery at all. It takes about 5 minutes of being connected for it the charge enough to work. It charges up fully during the day, then overnight it drains again. If I unplug it, it holds it charge just fine. It's like the car is draining the battery from the ipod. Anyone else have this problem? Is there a solution?

If you're saying that it used to never drain the battery on your iPod, but it is now, then I'd recommend trying to swap out the iPod's USB cable. Because outside of that, there's really nothing you can do other than physically disconnecting the iPod every time.
Mine picks up right where it left off every time and doesn't drain the battery, no matter if I leave it connected or not...but I'm using an iPhone 5.

I just got the car last week, and the ipod over the weekend. It's an older 5th gen Classic. I'm trying to avoid disconnecting every time. I wanted to hook it up, put it in the console, and forget about it. It's not working out that way. I guess I'll try switching the cable. I'll have to go buy one I guess.

I decided to just use my iPhone 5. I have all my music on there, I just didn't want to take my cable with me and hook it up every time I get in the car. I'm just going to get an extra lightning cable and leave it connected so I just have to plug the phone in. Seems like it's going to be easier than fighting this old ipod.

I know this won't help you guys, but my experience with the iPod/phone in my new Euro Civic has been awesome.
In the centre consul rear glove box I have 3 connections, 12v socket, USB and aux. I have connected my IPod Touch 5 to the aux purely to play music, the album art and music information comes up on the MI display and can be controlled by the dials on the steering wheel, the iPod is also being charged whilst connected.
The iPhone connects via the integrated bluetooth and a message appears on the MI display as soon as you turn the ignition on, the phone contacts also appear on there and again it can be controlled by the dials on the steering wheel.
Finally I have connected my old iPod Touch 3 that sits on a Tomtom cradle to the aux, this sits in the roll top tray in the centre consul, this gives me tom-tom satnav thro the stereo system and you can play music at the same time from it. the music fades out when a direction command is given, this system is done by selecting the aux option on the sourse menu and doesn't give you the album art and music detail that you get when using the USB.
The only minor irritation is that the roll top operates from from front to back, if they had designed it the other way around I could have left the Tomtom/ipod touch connected and out of sight with the cover closed.

For ios devices you should only use one input method at a time. It is impossible to transfer track data over the analog aux connection, the reason yours is is because your also using the usb to charge, the ipod when your doing this is actually playing the music over the usb connection, I know this because of the track data. If you leave the aux cable unplugged you will get the same experience. The software in our cars can interface with ios devices (both iphones and ipod touch) over usb. The aux port can be used with anything that has a 3.5mm headphones port. The Bluetooth allows audio and phone calls with many devices and will show track data with many. Usb should only be used with ios devices or flash drives. Connect any other device via usb the connection will constantly disconnect and reconnect looking for a connection, it doesn't simply charge only. If I plug my wifes iPhone into usb or Bluetooth it works fine smd includes track data. With my android phone on usb it cycles the connection constantly (this can ruin your battery) so I have to use Bluetooth. A standard mp3 player will have to use the aux port. Just trying to clarify for you and let you know your plugging in too many cables at once. If your displaying track data on your imid its not from the aux port.

From the "source" button on the steering wheel I can select all any one of the 3 Apple products to play music. USB, Aux or Bluetooth. Once Tomtom come out with a cradle that has the new Apple lightning connector then I'll be able to do away with my old iPod touch that I have the Tomtom cradle for now, or I could buy one of the old cradles for the iPhone and have everything running from that, except that wouldn't give me the track data, which in my opinion is such a cool feature. I'll carry on playing around for now and see which is the best solution.

Yeah. Playback of usb aux and Bluetooth isn't initialized until that source is selected. For my wifes iPhone I would just connect the Bluetooth for phone calls and use everything else via usb, as long as I don't select Bluetooth for my audio it will just be idle until a phone call comes in. I now hate using aux, I've gotten way to spoiled on meta tags on my imid. Just don't try charging your android phone via the cars usb port like I did or you'll be wondering why your battery is dead after streaming all day. I looked at my phone and saw the connection was just continually dropping looking for a compatible device (ios or flash drive).

And no offense but why in the world would you need 3 different input devices for music connected at once?

I don't, I was just pointing out that they are available. I doubt that I will ever play music via my iPhone on the bluetooth connection, like you said that will be just dedicated for the phone calls. The bonus with the iPod touch/tomtom cradle set up via the aux is that I can have satnav and music at the same time.
