Just a quick heads up, Im designing a custom lip now.
im in the third stage or R&D and will have a finished mold next weekend. I will be doing a test fit and paint the following week.
there will be pictures to come once the design is compleate and installed. This one will be fiberglass due to the cost of R&D, but the final product will be offered in CF and fiberglass. **prior to releasing photos of the final product i am also working on a patent **
The part is being designed on my 2015 Si Sedan.
cant wait to show you guys!

I am confused. How can you actually have a process that is new and useful while also being novel or non-obvious when manufacturing a lip?

Yeah, I am finding it hard to believe you have come up with a unique way of working with these materials.

I understand your skepticism, extraordinary claims will require extraordinary evidence. I plan on providing that once the product is complete.
To provide a little incite without reveling the details.
It’s not that I have discovered a new way of working with the materials rather a new design That I have not seen on the market that will offer new features. I hav'nt begun the patent process yet due to time constraints. but i will keep you posted

Ok. So, you are going after a design patent. It is important to distinguish between design and utility patents as very few people are familiar with design patents. Beware that it takes three years on average to be granted a patent. Plus, you are dealing with car parts that will be replicated by foreign entities who will not care about your patent. Bottom line to consider is if you want to exploit this for a full blown business or something on the side AND whether or not you will have the financial ability to litigate patent violations...providing it is approved as I am having a hard time envisioning something new that hasn't already been done. Just some food for thought.

I was not aware that I needed to announce or distinguish the struggles that lie ahead of my business venture, as I was only announcing the fact that I would have a new lip to offer as there seems to be a significant demand for the 2015 si. I also wasn’t expecting to be ridiculed when announcing my project. I do appreciate your concern in regards to the matter, and I will address the issues as they arise. Thanks for your input, feedback and brief lesson. I will take that into account when approaching the patent.
However your disbelief in my abilities to create something that has not been done, seems to stem from something personal, as you do not know myself or capabilities. But once again I do appreciate your concern, and I hope to provide a product that lives up to your expectations and suspends your disbelief.

I have read the comments. I don't think anyone is ridiculing you. Just some legit questions. It's not everyday someone announces this. I wish you luck and look forward to seeing it.

No ridicule intended. It is just hard to imagine at this point in car design and production for front lips, spoilers, and bodykits that something new has been created that warrants a patent. Especially considering the cost to recoup the $10k-$25k you will end up spending to patent the product. Also, there is a reason car manufacturers don't tend to patent parts anymore. It is too easy to make a minor change and not be subjected to the protections of the existing patent...also taking into account the aforementioned foreign entities.

It is a much more complicated process and undertaking than most people realize. Despite my skepticism, I just wanted to make sure you were aware of the many trials and tribulations ahead of you. Anyway, I wish you the best of luck.

Hurry up and file that patent paperwork so you can show this design off!

So would you say designing a new part with a new feature isn't even worth paying for a patent..?
A lip at $300 would take 33.3 sales just to make $10,000

At $500 it would wake 20 lips to get to 10,000

I can totally see your point on being curious about someone wanting to patent a new product.. Especially one for a civic.

Let's say the lip was 800$ for a carbon fiber one of course.

Would take you 12.5 sales to hit 10,000

800$ is a lot for a lip.

But I've seen people pay close to that for cd lips. Like the backyard one...

That's gross sales. That isn't taking into consideration the cost of the part, advertising, etc. you wouldn't break even at 33 sales. As for the patent....no. I wouldn't get one. You'll blow so much in legal fees it's stupid. If someone in China likes the part you make, they'll replicate it till their hearts content...sell it for way less... & you can't do a thing about it. Any company could make the slightest design change and the patent is useless.
