nice. so just headset and install then! Sometimes we used to charge to put each part on but if you paid for a "tune-up" and bought the parts we included the install with the tune. usually worked out favorably for the customer by a few dollars.

See what sort of deal they have for you if you purchase a chain, headset, and need both installed.

Ex: It was $20 to install a chain and $25-30 to press in a headset but a tune-up was only $50.

The rain has been killing me here lately. I haven't been out on a bike in around 10 days.. lol (you guys with winter will be like.. that's it?!)

Picked up a carbon front wheel to match the rear, and sold my Kysrium SLs.. this is the only spinning it's got since it arrived last week :(

Cool shot man! Nice looking wheels. Yeah, 10 days? I haven't ridden since November. I could now. but I don't ride unless its over 40F. Also road salt is super corrosive on cables. I'm trying to move somewhere warmer!

Come to Charlotte! lol

It's been about 2 weeks or so since I got on the road bike. Might be able to ride on Friday since I have the day off for Easter.

Hey Nix, have you ever messed/fixed rust on a frame before? Got 2 spots between the seat post and were the rear brake bolts on. Right where a rear fender would be added to the bike.
Kinda look like the below but painted over...

Hah! That's funny nomar, I was actually looking at job listings in the Charlotte area last night.

I've never fixed frame rust before. Just polished up old chrome fenders and stuff like that. Usually people aren't up to paying for that type of repair in this area. We take a brillo pad and it cleans up the chrome decent enough. Probably horrible for it in actuality but it does the job.

That head tube looks like a pretty bad hack job weld. I wouldn't trust it! Have you got a pic of your rusty area? Sand it down and see if it's just surface rust. The inside of "modern" steel frames (90's on) usually have airplane line oil coating the inside so they shouldn't rust from the inside out. It sounds like you are describing the brace between the seat stays. Short piece with a hole in it?

If that little brace is gone completely you could try and get it replaced or something welded back in.

They used to make these things called brake boosters. Brakes were starting to generate enough force to flex the older thin tubed steel frames so they came up with a bolt-on brace that sort of worked to add stiffness. How old is the bike? You can probably pick one of these things up pretty cheap to help reinforce the area. Don't expect any significant power increase from the brake though. These were gimmicky at best for "brake boosting" power.

The silver horse shoe shaped thing.

A nicely kitted 90's GT. It's just missing bar ends, a Kore stem, and a bullet bros. spring loaded chain tensioner to be completely "riced" if bikes could be ricey.
It has the ubiquitous Rock Shox Judy XC, "suspension" seatpost, & red brake booster out back to match.

Nix I'll take a pic of if tonight and might sand it down this weekend....will be better than me trying to explain it.

That headtube pic is actually off a brand new bike. It was given the "rust" treatment for looks, it was a "show" bike. At least thats what the little article on the webz said, lol.

Clearly you can see the affected area, same on the other side. Thinking I could get away with sanding it down....I thought it was worse.

Oh, yeah, that looks like it's just under the paint. Sand and touch up. You should be fine.

Well I signed up for what's called the Dirty Duathlon today. 5 mile run followed by 11 mile singletrack MTB. I'm not an athletic person, and I can't run, but I am determined to finish so we'll see how it goes!
MTB part will be a breeze, but I have 3 weeks to work on my running.

Nomar06 I luckily had some plastic wheel bags in the trunk that I covered the seat with!!

So I've spent the last week or two weighing up my options on what I want to do more. I've decided that I get more out of competitively MTB'ing than being on the road. So I've sold the carbon road wheels and got the parts to basically rebuild my MTB into a much more capable form. I will still ride on the road a lot but I don't need super fancy parts on the road bike!
I have the following coming for the MTB:
Lefty Speed Carbon fork (used)
ZTR Arch wheelset (new takeoffs)
XC3 SI stem
Magura XT6 Brakeset
Magura Storm SL rotors
Magura Post-SI adapters
XTR BB90 Bottom Bracket
Either XTR Crankset or Race Face next SL ( haven't decided yet bc I'm not sure if the RF will work)

Funny how much one set of carbon wheels will pay for.
Will post pics when it's all on!

Sa-weeeet!!!!

I'd recommend the XTR crankset. Personally I feel shimano rings just shift the best. I love raceface stuff but the cranks I've had from them, they never shifted as good as a set of shimanos. I've also found that the extra $$ for a good front derailleur makes a huge difference.

I don't think you would go wrong either way and the RF cranks are usually available in some frickin nice colors.

The RF next sl is carbon, so that's the advantage. I'm not gonna run either brands chainrings as I have a 1x9 setup with a monoveloce ring. Both would be bought used. It's been up in the 80s here the last two days. I'd love it to stay in the 50s. lol
