DIY ADExternal's 2012 Honda Civic Reverse Backup Camera DIY

Well I'm used to dealing with wiring and electronics, so that was pretty easy, the hardest part for me was the top part of the dashboard and unscrewing the imid screen, there were 5 screws, not 4 like in the picture, and that last one was so hard to get to, I ended up just leaving it out instead of going through the trouble of putting it back in.

Oh wow, I just noticed there is 5 in the picture.... (I wonder why no one has ever told me :( ) given that I only took the dash apart twice and wrote the DIY on top of my head lmao. Thanks 323 I'll update.

No worries! I couldn't have done this without your clear and simple DIY, it's great

Also, if you or anyone has trouble with the pins, here's my advice:

The little black piece on the bottom of the 32 pin connector only comes out about 2-3mm, and there's a very slight audible click. I kept trying to pull it out more but it's a very slight movement.

And, at first I couldn't get the pins to slide all the way in, then started experimenting which way to put the pin in, and found it easiest this way:

I hope that helps!

I am wiring an aftermarket backup cam that will display on a Pioneer head unit. The backup cam has a set of power cables that need to tap the reverse light wires. No big deal. I get that. However, the Pioneer head unit instructions say "of the two lead wires connected to the back lamp, connect the one in which the voltage changes when the gear shift is in the reverse position." Does this mean I should run a wire from the Pioneer harness all the way back to the reverse light and tap it at the same place as I do for the camera itself? Do I connect it to the positive or negative?

Yea, instead of the wiring it to the iMid. Use the reverse signal to that one instead. It will tell the pioneer unit to switch over to reverse camera mode.

So, just to be clear, run the wire from the Pioneer harness back to the reverse lamp and tap the positive wire in the same place I tap for the camera itself?

Yea, run the pioneer wire that receives the signal to the reverse lamp in the back which is the same place where the camera gets it's power.

I do but I'm working in the machine lab at the moment. I'll get with you tonight if you still need help.

Just wondering if the original LED light output is enough to light up the license plate. I know ADX changed the LEDs in the camera to add more (from 4 square LED lights to 8).... Did you guys also change or did you keep they camera as is (4 square LED lights)?

Should install an ambient lighting while you have your dash out. I'm currently writing a 30$ ambient kit diy, its a very dim accent, just enough to give a good lighting. also controlled by couple switches and very OEM look and feel.
Just curious if you posted anything else about this.... I know you have been busy though.
