Clutch Noise

It' happening with my 2014 honda civic si I have 63000 miles
___________
I was under the impression there was a TSB. There is not. I was at Honda today and finally had to leave at closing time because they couldn't find one.

Yeah. It doesn't seem to be a fatal problem just an annoying thing.
________________
I still can't find the actual TSB. Nor can my dealer, who would love to have the work. The place is a ghost town.

A handful of si owners had clutch springs that broke. They were told they would basically be on the hook for replacement if the tech didn’t find a “defect” when they pulled the clutch. I recall all but maybe 1 person who had their clutch replaced under warranty due to the broken springs. There wasn’t a tsb on the clutch.

I am one of the people that my local Honda dealership did not fix the issue. but I have gone 45k miles on it with out serious problem that I know of. but I am getting a PRL Turbo kit in soon so when I take out the Clucth and flywheel I can see how bad it is.

the dealership I by my cars from (80 miles away) I recently told him the issues I had with my local Honda dealership and was 100% willing to replace it on the spot even out of warranty. but since I am upgrading it anyway was no point to waste it.

@mySIck With a turbo you'll need a pretty stout clutch setup, right? There are several good options at www.clutchmasters.com (great vid on how to select the right one too)
Which one do you have in mind so far SIck?

P.S. I'm still mostly stock with maybe 20HP extra in bolt ons... i'm just sticking with the FX200 or FX250, one or two steps from OEM. It's important to keep it drivable. You might need the 300 or more.

Here's that video on choosing the right clutch:

so far I have the comp stage 4 in mind or the Exedy. and to be honest I forgot about clutch master. but you are right the factory clutch will not hold for long and some of the intro ones are only good for full bolt ons.

that was what I was going to do if my clutch went out was get something like the fx200.

that was a well explained products review. hmm I do like the 300 but only thing is he said it's more for road racing over drag. but I am not planning to do much drag racing more into road course racing. but at the same time I do enjoy a few fun passes.

Stage 4 is serious stuff. But when you think about the power of a turbo you might actually need Stage 4! I'd give clutchmasters a call. Doesn't cost anything to pick their brains.

I'd like to know what's the hardest thing for a clutch, besides drifting and drag racing. I'm like you, a regular daily driver who likes to have some fun. Mostly hot off the line, or power shifting up to 4th. But do we need a super high performance clutch just because we drive like that occasionally? Because those high-end clutches don't last as long, and they're often not very much fun to drive.

Let me know what you find out!

Just some outside info after coming back to this thread in a minute but my stock clutch was chattering and the springs were loose. Had rub marks on a few springs as well, not detrimental but annoying for sure. I replaced it and also upgraded to a CC stage 1.5 full organic sprung clutch capable of 300-350 torque I believe? Regardless, the stock motor spins a solid 3rd shift and it STILL HAS SPRING CHATTER ISSUES! 2lb lighter flywheel yes but omg it's annoying at times. AND it's the 8th gen clutch/flywheel that bolts up.

Point being the chatter seems to be something that you can't escape especially when modding which I've learned to deal with.

'can't escape especially when modding" is the phrase that caught my eye!
Thanks Dark!

I didn't pay for it but it was replaced under "good will". It was months in the making, too.

I have had this issue on my 2013 Si for almost a year now (just cracked 60k miles), it's still intermittent and embarrassing. I found that topping off the fluid in the clutch reservoir got rid of it temporarily, and when it came back it wasn't as loud or consistent.

Hey, y'all, I just saw this thread from Hardmotion about the clutch master cylinder issues with 9th Gens. Is it possible that this could be the source of our noisy clutch issues?

No this is not the issue being described in this thread.
The stock cmc does have a "delay valve" which can cause issues when trying to shift quickly. Many users just remove the valve but leave the stock cmc.

I guess it was overdue, but just recently I have been getting the noise again. I had my clutch assembly replaced under warranty around 38k miles. Now I'm just shy of 100k miles and it is back. It doesn't do it very often, but I have definitely heard it on 3 distinct occasions over the last two weeks.

So I've been experiencing some clutch noise in my 2012 Civic SI for the past month or so. It happens when I'm starting from a dead stop. It's like a grinding type of niose once the clutch reaches the friction point. I had it in the dealer today for an oil change and to replace something with the driver door due to a recall and I got them to take a look at it.

They said it could be springs or something inside the clutch and they'd have to order in the part. They also said that it should be covered under warranty however, if they get in there and see that there is "a lot of scorch marks" and "signs of abuse" that I'd be on the hook for the repair.

Just thought I'd share it here.

Note I've had my car for 15 months and it has 31,100 kms (~19,300 miles)
I bought my 2013 Civic Si from Lute Riley Honda in Richardson TX in November 2015 with 44,000 miles on it. It was Certified Pre-owned. I paid $870 for the extended warranty because when I said I was worried about the clutch, the finance guy said it would cover it. (Yep, right there you can tell how bright I am, and how this will likely end.) At that time I was unaware of the Civic clutch noise phenomenon. I was just anxious about buying a used Si. Within a month it starting squealing. I went back to the dealer in February, and they said they “could not replicate it long enough to diagnose the cause.” Finally last fall the noise became more consistent, so I took it back. I provided links to the videos and testimonials of folks whose dealers stepped up for them. For those of you whose dealer took care of it for you, I’m jealous! Lute Riley Honda would not.

@hondasnbeemers. Hey there... welcome to 9th!

I've had a similar (if not identical) noise for about 12,000 miles. My car has just under 70k overall. Should be no big deal, but i'm not a mechanic or specialist either. For me it's been going on for at least 10K. Somebody explained it to me as a spring (s) on one of the clutch plates... pressure plate?

The springs get slightly worn out and the engagement produces a BRIEF grinding noise right off the line. Two years later (for me) it's been nothing. Hopefully the same applied to you.

Just pay attention to how it shifts, how the tranny works overall. But at least for me it's been nothing critical.

Keep us up to date... thanks!
